The End of an Awesome Week

So, the first week of my internship has passed. Undoubtedly this has been one of the most exciting weeks of my summer. The amount of knowledge which I have gathered about Social Media and its various implementations were truly significant. Never did a moment come by when I felt bored doing research on this topic.

This week also reminded me of an article which I came across in my freshmen year at CMU – “It’s a Flat World After All” written by Thomas L Friedman.  The article describes how Web 2.0 is shrinking the world. How various applications are connecting people throughout the world irrespective of their customs, culture, language and traditions.

I am extremely positive and truly hoping to use this knowledge I gathered during my initial week here and actually implementing it towards the successful propagation of AMOMA.

In short Week 1 of my internship here at AMOMA has passed so fast that I couldn’t keep a hold of it. I guess it’s primarily because of the huge amount of information I got to conquer everyday through this awesome internship.

My First Day at AMOMA

The working hours for my internship are pretty relaxed. I need to be at the office by 9 am and can leave anytime after 2 pm. Today I left for the office pretty early since it’s my very first day and I don’t want to be there late. I was pretty lucky as well, most of roads were free of traffic and I reached my destination in about 20 minutes.

So my first day at work turned out to be pretty interesting. Upon my arrival I was greeted by my Manager Mr. Travers Lee. Travers primarily works at the Museum of Islamic Art, but he comes to the AMOMA office at least once every week. He explained to me the various tasks and responsibilities I am supposed to deliver each week. Even though all of the eight weeks seemed like a lot of work to me, I knew I would be able to learn from them a lot which actually is the main reason as to why I took this internship at the first place.

My task for week 1 was primarily research work. Since I am interning on Social Media, I was required to explore and study how various museums and other institutions throughout the world make use of Web 2.0 applications such as Facebook, YouTube etc… During my research I did stumble upon some remarkable advertising strategies, for example the strategy adopted by an Australian firm in order to publicize – “The World’s Best Job”. The amount of popularity this particular ad got was truly outstanding. Its YouTube channels, its flashy banner ads were one of the most highly viewed throughout the world. The most astonishing thing which I came across was the popularity achieved by its viral video and what strategy they did to achieve that.

Also I cam across this very cool video on YouTube:
Do Watch It!!

Day 1 of my internship passed pretty quickly, I guess the primary reason behind it was my excitement. The importance of Social Media and its advantages are truly infinite and I am sure in the coming 8 weeks I will learn more about it.

My Internship

This summer I got selected to do a two month long internship at Arab Museum of Modern Art (AMOMA). It is a new organization established a couple of years ago under Qatar Museum Authority. At the moment their office consists of two huge villas located at Garrafa right opposite to Landmark Mall. The entire staff over here is very busy and are working on various projects to get their museum up and running towards the end of this year.

The physical construction of the museum at the moment is towards its closing stages. A very interesting fact which I came across was, the museum being built was once upon a time a primary school for kids. However, since it was abandoned for a long period of time I suppose it is an awesome idea to reuse the resources available.

So I got selected for this internship through the Professional Day at CMUQ. I am working in the Marketing and Media Department and my position is titled – SOCIAL MEDIA ASSISTANT (Sounds pretty cool to me). The main aim of my job is to use as well as understand the importance of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Flickr etc… in the current world and how we can use it to increase the audience of a particular product or institution. Web 2.0 has revolutionized the world. Social Websites are becoming a new way to attract more audiences. Websites such as Facebook and YouTube rank in the top three websites visited worldwide. (Click here to view rankings)This internship would help me to realize the potential of such applications in the coming future and use it to our best interests.

However, I am not the only intern they selected; Nasreen Zahan a graduate from my university is also interning with me in the same department. It’s an eight week long internship and the both of us here hope to learn a lot of things through it. I personally have never worked in such an environment were in I would be dealing with the image of an organization. I am extremely looking forward to this internship and hoping my best to overcome the many challenges I would be facing.

My First Blogging Experience

So here I am writing my first blog ever. I have not been much of a blog person throughout my life. I might have read a couple of blogs written by some famous celebrities from Hollywood and Bollywood but never did I take the initiative to move further on with it. I don’t know what to expect out from a blog or what topics should I focus on while writing it. Should I focus on writing interesting topics of the current world which will gain me more followers or should I just stick to my everyday routine which by the way is also very interesting. Also I have no idea how much importance should I pay towards the grammar and structure of my sentences. Should I just use plain and simple English or should I use a very complex and elaborate English.

A lot of questions are running through my head at the moment, but I have decided to ignore all of them and move forward. I have decided that this Blog would be a place where in I would express myself freely and in my own words. I won’t pay much attention to the grammar as long as I am able to convey my message to the readers.

Never did I know that – one day I would be sitting in my office cubicle and writing a blog describing my day to day activities.

Wish Me Luck!!!
